Cockys Complication!


Cocky is a pretty 25 year old female Galah with a MASSive problem..
Galahs are prone to lipomas or fatty lumps like this one, especially when fed a predominately seed based diet and Cocky is no exception to the rule!


Cocky presented to Dr Michelle a few weeks ago with this lumpy issue, which was causing her some discomfort.
Surgical removal was determined to make Cocky feel more comfortable and improve her quality of life as well as a diet change.


Dr Jody performed the procedure successfully with the help of our exotic team, Cocky was able to recover exceptionally well.


Cocky was boarding with us for her daily medication until her sutures were due to be removed. 
She quickly became used to her daily meds and started to try to elude being caught.

Her cheeky antics and her beautiful whistles are missed by the staff, but we are sure she is happy to be home!

 

A Crazy Little Thing Called Bumblefoot!

This is Elvis the spunky young rooster!
His owners tell us that he has a fairly carefree life and a great attitude to match!
Unfortunately he presented into the clinic to see Dr Emily today as his owners noticed he was limping slightly on his right leg.
Upon his physical exam, Dr Emily noticed that his right foot had just started to form some pododermatitis or bumble foot.


As the infection was very mild, surgical intervention is not needed at this point. 
However, he most certainly required some treatment.
Elvis was sent home with instructions to bathe his right foot (or both) in iodine solution and bandage the foot daily. Dr Emily also instructed his owners to keep Elvis in a clean and dry environment until his next vet visit and was given some medication to go home with to aid his recovery and pain management.


Elvis presented back to the clinic a few weeks later with significant improvement of his foot! 


We are so happy that Elvis is back to feeling his rockstar self!

Canary Conundrum!


Sweet Melia the canary had an unknown accident which caused one of her legs to become necrotic (i.e. the tissue was dead). 


Dr Dylana performed a leg amputation to make her more comfortable. Surprisingly, little birds can do well with one leg! 


Melia’s family has informed us that she is doing very well after surgery! 

Lala’s Lumpy Lesion!


Lala is a 14 year old Galah that presented to our clinic with a bit of a big issue!
He had a huge and ugly looking mass on his lower abdomen that was starting to become necrotic and cause Lala some discomfort.


Dr Michelle decided that the mass had to be surgically removed in order for Lala to have a good quality of life. 
Unfortunately Galahs are more prone to getting fatty tumours or lipomas like this one compared to other breeds of bird and is largely due to their diet. 


Dr Michelle removed the mass successfully and Lala recovered very well in one of our brinseas (temperature controlled box) as birds temperatures drop rapidly during any period of stress. 
Lala was able to go home that afternoon with some medication to continue his healing process.
We can’t wait to see Lala back for his check up appointment but his owners inform us that he is doing very well and is a lot more comfortable! 

Spice’s Spicy Abdomen!


Spice is a beautiful Isa Brown hen that presented to the clinic in respiratory distress and lethargy.


Dr Emily had seen her the day before but unfortunately she was not improving, so her owners made the responsible decision to bring her back in for another check up.

Due to have previously seen similar cases in other chickens, Dr Emily suggested an ex-lap (exploratory laparotomy) to investigate reproductive disease. 

Isa Browns are particularly prone to reproductive disease as they age.

The surgery was successful and Spice woke up well and was able to go home the same day with some pain relief & an anti-inflammatory. 


She has returned for her post surgery appointment to check her surgical wound and sutures which we are please to see that it is all healing remarkably well!  

Pleasant Parrot Pedicure!


This stunning blue and gold macaw is Matilda!
Her nails have become a bit sharp and Matilda is a bit cheeky when her owners try to perform a nail cut at home so she presented into our clinic to see Dr Harry, so he can do just that! 
Birds are very intelligent animals and it is known that they can “hold a grudge” or it have a negative impact on the owner/bird bond when an owner tries to perform routine trimmings and accidentally may knick a quick or injure the bird in the process.
She was very well behaved for Dr Harry after some mild sedation and was able to be returned to her owner and go home shortly after!

Concern For A Cockatiel!


This is Georgia the cockatiel whom came in to see Dr Nao for a consult to assess a small mass near her cloaca. Georgia was given a quick general anaesthetic in the form of a gaseous induction to assess the mass properly, take some blood for testing and to retrieve an FNA sample (a sample taken by injecting a small needle into the mass & collect any cells or liquid out)
The sample of the FNA was suggestive of a cyst and her bloods came back unremarkable which means according to her bloods her organs and their functions are working well. Georgia was able to go home that same afternoon once awake enough plus with a plan agreed upon by Dr Nao and Georgias owners to enhance her quality of life.
Due to other predisposing factors of the location of the mass and Georgias age, it was decided that it was in Georgias best interest to have it surgically removed. After 2 weeks, Georgia was admitted into hospital for the day to have her surgery performed.
The procedure was a success & Georgia was able to go home the same afternoon with some take home medication to assist her healing.

She has since been back for a recheck appointment and we are excited to inform you that she has recovered very well!

Wallys Wonderous Wound!


Wally is yet another galah that has presented into our clinic with a mass that is causing him discomfort.
This issue is common amongst this breed unfortunately, however surgical correction is possible and enables these beautiful birds to have a normal and quality life! 
Wally is 40 years old and his owner noticed his lump and brought him in promptly to start his healing journey and did opt for life changing surgery, by the form of a lumpectomy (lump removal) performed by Dr Nao and our wonderful exotic nursing team!
Dr Nao excised the lump with our special electorcautery machine that corterises blood vessels to prevent large blood loss as every drop counts especially in exotic species like birds.
The surgery was a success and Wally recovered very well post procedure and he is doing very well at home!
