Limb fractures are a common and often painful injury in pets. They involve breaks or cracks in the bones of the legs, feet, or pelvis, and can range from simple, clean fractures to complex breaks involving multiple fragments or joints.

• Trauma: The most common cause, including incidents like being hit by a car, falling, or rough play
• Pathological weakness: Conditions such as bone cancer, infections, or nutritional deficiencies can weaken bones and lead to fractures
• Developmental or genetic disorders: Congenital abnormalities or diseases like osteogenesis imperfecta can result in brittle or malformed bones
• Improper handling or accidents: Fractures may occur from being dropped, stepped on, or restrained incorrectly—especially in small or fragile animals.

• Physical Examination - limping, swelling, or an inability to bear weight may indicate a fracture
• Digital Radiographs (X-Ray)
• Computer Tomography Scan (CT). This modality of imaging may be recommended for a clearer, three-dimensional view

• Bone plates and screws for stable, long-term repair
• Pins and wires for specific types of fractures, especially near joints
• Minimally invasive methods where appropriate to reduce recovery time
